MTSS date 11/29- Referrals Due!

A note from Deb Green:

Please remember to submit names for MTSS meeting on 11/29.  The due date for the referrals is 11/17.  I know this is a new process, so please remember that you can turn in referrals at any time in the MTSS box in the office (upper right part of the mailbox).  No need to wait until they are due.

Also, please remember to alert to an MTSS member (preferably myself) about parent requests for testing.  In that instance, it is important for you to still complete the MTSS form and submit a paper version in the mailbox located in the office.  If parent requests are received through other staff members aside from the teacher, the teachers will be asked to fill out the forms at that time as well.  A review of the information and contact with the parent will be made.  Keeping in mind every one is an individual, the requests may lead to different avenues of testing or interventions.

If you need me to send the MTSS form for you again to find it easier, please let me know 🙂  It should be in your Google Sheets or your Google Drive.

GREAT LITERACY STRATEGY

Inferencing is often a challenge for students, but is such a valuable literacy strategy.  Check out this article on teaching inferencing.  It can certainly apply to many grade levels with a few adjustments.

Try Quizalize to Run a “Quiz Night” for Students & Parents

Last week in Atlanta a teacher asked me about the possibility of running a “Kahoot night” in which her students and their parents would play Kahoot games at home together. There were two problems she was running into in organizing that idea. The first problem was timing the event so that everyone would sign-in at the same time. The second problem was that students couldn’t see the answer choices for the quiz. My solution for her was to try using Quizalize instead of Kahoot to host a quiz night for students and their parents.

Quizalize is a quiz game platform that will remind you of Kahoot. Like Kahoot, students play your quiz games on their laptops or tablets by going to the Quizalize website then entering their names and a class code. Students are awarded points for correctly answering questions quickly. Students are given feedback instantly on every quiz question that they answer. A total score is presented to students at the end of every quiz. What’s different about Quizalize is that you can have students play a quiz game as a classroom activity or you an assign to them to play at home. Either way that they play students receive immediate feedback and can track their own progress on a game when they play it multiple times.

In the video embedded below I provide an overview of how to create, distribute, and track quiz games in Quizalize

New Survey Details How Teachers Use Their Own Money to Fill in Equity Gaps

An overwhelming majority of educators agree that equity in education should be a national priority—but in the meantime, teachers report dipping into their own pockets to help fill in the gaps.

Scholastic, the education publishing company, surveyed 4,721 public school educators—a pool comprised of 3,694 teachers (including 76 school librarians) and 1,027 principals—over the summer for its nationally representative report. Teachers and principals largely say that their students in both high- and low-poverty schools face barriers to learning that come from outside the school environment. To meet the personal needs of students, and to supplement classroom resources to enhance learning, teachers and principals feel obligated to use their own money.

These findings aren’t necessarily surprising or new—teachers have been tasked with funding their own classrooms for years—but the scope of the survey sheds some light on what educators are prioritizing.

teacher purchased.png

On average in the past year, teachers who were surveyed spent $530 of their own money on classroom items. Teachers in high-poverty schools spent nearly 40 percent more—an average of $672.

As the chart shows, 70 percent of responding teachers said they purchased food and snacks for their children. Sixty-five percent purchased cleaning supplies. And 26 percent of teachers who were surveyed said they bought clothing for their students.

Principals also used their own money—an average of $683 over the past year—to pay for classroom or student supplies, and for principals in high-poverty schools, that figure increased to $1,014. Seventy-nine percent of principals purchased food and snacks for students.

Just 46 percent of teachers in high-poverty schools receive discretionary funds from their school, district, or parent-teacher organizations, compared to 61 percent of teachers in low-poverty schools. The top five funding priorities identified by teachers in the survey are, in order: more staff to reduce class sizes; high-quality instructional materials and textbooks; classroom technology; higher salaries; and academic or social-emotional intervention initiatives and programs.

A slight majority of teachers (56 percent) have purchased their own books for their classroom. Most teachers have classroom libraries, but 31 percent of teachers have fewer than 50 books in their classroom. Elementary teachers have an average of 362 books, middle school teachers have 189, and high school teachers have 93. A majority of teachers—54 percent—report needing culturally relevant books. Teachers also want recently published books, books with diverse characters, books in languages other than English, and nonfiction books.

Educators in the survey stressed the importance of year-round and at-home access to books to increase student learning. Teachers reported funding their own classroom libraries so that their students could borrow the books to take home.

Teachers in the report mostly agreed that despite the challenges, they felt like their job was rewarding because of the satisfaction they get from working with students.

As one middle school teacher in Nevada put it: “I do what I do because I am passionate about giving every child the opportunity to reach their full potential and never be limited by their circumstances, environments, or disabilities.”

From the Tech World…

The bookmark has been added to all elementary student Google accounts. It can be accessed by having the students log in to the Chrome devices, then going to the top left of Chrome, selecting “appublicschools.com Bookmarks”, and choosing the Illuminate entry from the list.

All teachers can add their own bookmarks to this Shared Bookmarks Web Site: https://sites.google.com/a/appublicschools.com/apps-class-share/
Each teacher has edit rights to their own respective page. Any bookmark or document they want their students to see, they can simply add them to that site, and all students will be able to access it from the Chromebooks and lab Chromeboxes at any time.
Lastly, if staff members are logged into Chrome (follow these steps if not), then the staff members can also follow the above steps to access that Share Bookmarks Web Site.

THANK YOU!

I greatly appreciate those teachers who took the initiative

to sign up and welcome our RESA guests into their classrooms.

Thank You: Velaine, Aubrey, Renee, Angela and Jerry!

I appreciate the 3rd grade team for their willingness to help

but due to their schedule conflict (PREP) they were unable to host visitors.

PLEASE REMIND STUDENTS TO GRAB THEIR JACKETS

AT LUNCH.

Please remind your students to grab their coats when they are leaving for lunch.  We are having too many students who need to return back to class to get their coats.  We do not have the staffing to walk each student back and forth.  Nor are we able to house students in the cafe who do not have a jacket because it’s too cold outside.   We appreciate the reminder.

Thank you!

Math in Focus Pathway Update

 Elementary Teachers,
Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey related to the two Pathway options of lesson sequences in MIF, and thank you, once again, to the teachers who met with me after school earlier in the year to begin to develop the talking points that were shared previously.  Everyone’s feedback and involvement were very helpful to the decision-making process.  In the end, the majority of our teaching staff selected the Singapore Pathway option, and after consulting with our principals and the MIF gurus, we are indeed going to follow the Singapore Pathway.
Key Points
  • While both Pathways have advantages and disadvantages, now that we have selected the Singapore Pathway, we need to implement it with fidelity.

  • MIF is a research-based series our district invested significant resources in, and we will need to use it as the publishers intended to realize its full potential.

  • In future years, we will have a better sense if any supplementation is required.

  • Implementing the Singapore Pathway with fidelity will help us maintain consistency from classroom to classroom throughout the district, which is important for our students and the collaborative work we will do together.

  • The Singapore Pathway will absolutely prepare our students for the assessments associated with the Common Core, including NWEA and M-STEP.

By following the Singapore Pathway
  • We are following the sequence of lessons that was originally intended by the publishers, which they continue to recommend to schools and districts.
  • We are covering some topics/concepts prior to the year they appear in the Common Core State Standards, but the intent of those lessons is to build understanding towards concepts in later grades.
  • The vertical alignment amongst topics as students move from grade to grade is fully aligned.
  • We can still cover important lessons from the CCSS Pathway if needed (although this will likely require some further discussion once we have a better handle on the series).

Additional Background Information

  • The first few editions of Math In Focus (MIF), based on the Singapore textbooks My Pals Are Here, were written before the completion of the Common Core.  The MIF Singapore material was a model for the writing of the Common Core State Standards.

  • We have the 2015 version of MIF.  All previous versions of MIF (including the version Northville uses) only have the Singapore Pathway.

  • Kindergarten does not have the different Pathways listed in their books, but their books represent the lesson sequence of the Singapore Pathway.

  • I would estimate the lessons covered are identical between both Pathways for at least 80% of the school year for each grade level.

Lastly, I came across pacing guides for grades 1-5 that we can use as a reference for this school year.  I would not be overly concerned if we are not operating at the suggested pace as this is still just our first year of implementation of this new program.  So, these guides will be used merely as a reference for now.  Also, the MIF experts have shared with me that it is unlikely that we will “finish the book” this first year as it takes time to get off the ground with the series especially because we have come across several learning gaps with our students during this transition.  The pacing guides can be mildly confusing as it lists both the Singapore and the CCSS Pathways.  Nonetheless, there are some helpful notes at the bottom of each calendar page worth attending to, as well.  You can access the folder via Google Drive at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B9C8i4hmU9AmTjB0Uk5CV3VNb00?usp=sharing
I appreciate your diligence in reading the entirety of this epic-length email, and please let me know if I can help in any way.
All the best,
Phil
