Mileage Club 2016

Thursday, September 22nd will be the kickoff day for Mileage Club.  Every Tuesday and Thursday until October 20th. (Rain Day make-up)  As in previous years, students are given the opportunity to walk or run during their lunch recess.  This program promotes health and fitness in grades K-5.  The Mileage Club course will be supervised by parent volunteers.  The course is located around the field behind the school.   A foot charm will be given for each 1 mile (4 laps around) your child completes by his/her teacher each week.  The foot charms can be placed on a chain that they will be given after the first week.  At the end of the Mileage club, winners will be decided based on overall laps.  There will be only 1 prize per 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  In the case of a tie, a name will be randomly drawn for each place.

Please remind students:

PBIS is an expectation while participating in Mileage Club.

4 feet checked off their tracking card = 1 mile and a foot charm (teachers will pass out charms once   a week)

You must carry your tracker card on the course.

Lost charms and/or chains WILL NOT be replaced.

You can walk or run the course.  Kindergarten must walk only.

You MUST stop and have a volunteer mark your tracker card after EACH lap at the Start/Stop cone.       Only a volunteer may mark you card.

You must complete the full lap for it to count.

No corner cutting!  Your lap will not be counted.

The last 5 minutes of recess you will be asked to return to the playground.

Each Kindergarten class is required to have at least 2 parent volunteers to walk with the students.  Lunch Aides are welcome to join students or monitor the playground.  Volunteers will be available at approximately 11:00am until 1:10pm Tuesday and Thursday through October 20th.

Thank you for your support!

SIMON SINEK – Start With Why

TED TALK

Start with WHY

The best organisations foster collective commitment because their leaders inspire everyone to take action. When people understand why they do something, they do it with their heart in it because they choose to, not because they have to. WHY is about what you believe…and this is a platform upon which we build our values, attitudes and winning behaviours. Great organisations keep focused on their WHY. Change will generally result from changing values, which requires an understanding of WHY. In his book and his TED talk, Start with Why, Simon Sinek gives great insight into the the power of WHY

Greetings Lindemann Parents!

I wanted to send out a couple quick updates regarding Halloween at Lindemann Elementary.

  • Monday, October 31st.
  • 10:30 AM.  Halloween Parade.  Outside
  • Classroom parties directly after the parade (classroom teacher would communicate an alternate schedule with their families)
  • Parents assisting with parties MUST be cleared with the teacher
  • Parents assisting must check into the main office after the parade
  • Parents are asked NOT to enter the building before the parade.

Costumes:

  • Students will wear their costumes to school.
  • All costumes must be school appropriate
  • No play guns or weapons of any kind
  • Please do not allow your child to wear a mask.  Masks tend to slip causing a possible trip and fall accident / injury.

Parade Path:

  • Weather permitting.  We will be outside for our parade.  Our plan is to start the parade with our Kindergarten classes.  We will walk through the building picking up our 1st grade classes and exit door # 9 (1st grade doors).  We will re-enter Lindemann at door # 10 picking up our 2nd and 3rd grade classes. We will walk through the halls and exit door # 11 picking up our 4th and 5th grade classes.  We will walk through the staff parking lot to Carter street. We will walk up Carter Street  (in-front of the main entrance) to Wick Street.  We will follow Wick Street to Becker Street. We will walk down Becker Street to door # 11 (5th grade doors) where we will re-enter the building.  Each class will then proceed back to their classrooms for their parties.
  • We will not be exiting and entering through the main entrance.
  • Parents assisting in the classrooms MUST enter through the main entrance after the parade to check into the building.

The staff and students are excited and hope you will be able to join us during our parade.

Thank you

GoNoodle – 500,000 Teachers Are Using It, Are You?

“I think we’re doing children a disservice by not allowing them to get up and move!”

Welcome back to The PE Umbrella my friends. It is a pleasure to have you with us once again today for a truly special episode as I am joined by not one, but two guests!

I chat with Mary Corder, the content marketing manager for GoNoodle and Simon McLoughlin, a Primary School teacher, Class Dojo and GoNoodle ambassador. We delve into their experience to chat ALL things Primary PE including top tips, favourite resources, how physical activity impacts learning and why GoNoodle will transform your daily teaching experience for the better.

Mary and Simon share superb advice that is sure to have YOU fired up to try in YOUR school! Be sure to visit theGoNoodle website to sign up completelyFREE and start browsing the many amazing videos on offer. So what are you waiting for? Click play right here or subscribe to the PE Umbrella on iTunes to listen at your own leisure whenever you choose.

What I Learned: Physical Activity has such a huge impact on the function of the brain!  So let’s use it.  Sometimes it can be hard for teachers to find that extra time to do more physical activity or PE with their children.  With GoNoodle, this is no longer an excuse!  Using this resource ties in perfectly with the ‘Growth Mindset’ approach to learning that many schools have and are adopting currently.  I see nothing but benefits emerging from using this resource and embedding it into your daily routines benefits not only the children, but YOU, the teacher too.  The image below, taken from the BBC earlier this week was one that I tweeted.  It explains ALL.  Need I say more?

Dear Teachers, as you know, we have moved our evaluation system to an online platform.  That platform allows us to view the same tasks, and collaborate through comments.  We have asked for the following thus far:
2 Professional Goals
1 Student Growth Goal
In order to have a complete portfolio online, we are asking that all, not just non-tenure teachers, submit the self assessment in the Stages system.  This will allow us to have everything under one “roof”.
For tenured staff, you may use a previous copy of your self-assessment, or choose to update with some new choices in the tab that identifies “Self-Assessment” Please be sure this is completed by your final evaluation.
For non-tenured staff. you must complete the self-assessment and it is due by October 1.
So now, the ASK is:
Self-Assessment- All
2 Professional goals
1 Student Growth Goal
Please see your principal for additional info on system access, and/or any training you need to complete this task.

CLASS DOJO BIG IDEAS: GROWTH MINDSET VIDEOS

  • Growth Mindset #1 – Your brain is like a muscle

    by The Mojo Show

  • Overview

Introduce your students to the idea of a Growth Mindset. The simple idea that your brain is like a muscle is proven to have profound impact on learning!

Watch the video with students – they’ll love the story and identify with Mojo’s struggle. The video ends with a question, leading right into a class discussion.

  • 1 5mWatch together

If you don’t have a projector, that’s OK. Plenty of teachers just play the video on a laptop, tablet, or even a mobile phone.

  • 2 5-10mDiscuss

    Printable discussion guide

    1) Do you agree with Katie that anyone can learn to become smarter? Why or why not?

    2) Have you ever felt like Mojo? What would you say to a friend who was feeling like Mojo?

    3) Share a story of a time when YOU (the teacher) felt like giving up, or felt like you weren’t smart enough to succeed. How did you handle it? Be honest 🙂

Want to go further? Try a fun activity to really make growth mindset stick…

LEAVING YOUR CLASSROOM

If you leave the classroom at any time with your students that is not on the schedule (specials, computer lab, Friday Rewards), please call, email, or send a student to the office to notify us of your whereabouts.  It is really challenging to explain to families why we can’t locate their little friends when they need to pick them up!

If you have a partner teacher for Book Buddies, please also send the information about your Book Buddy time and meeting space each week.  I will create a google sheet for us to add too.

FORMATIVE & SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Something to keep in mind:
Formative assessment is when the chef tastes the soup
(He can still do something about it; it’s actionable.)
Summative assessment is when the customer tastes the soup
(It’s too late. The judgement has been made.)
Utilizing formative assessment regularly in all subject areas, but particularly reading and math, helps us to meet the needs of our students in real time.  Please let me know if you’d like suggestions for formative assessment opportunities aside from those we have been practicing regularly — turn and talk, white boards, sticky note responses. . .
Here’s a link to a short blog post on formative assessment:  https://www.nwea.org/blog/2012/formative-assessment-the-minute-to-minute-day-by-day-kind/

Classroom Setup Mirrors Your Beliefs

By Gail Boushey

September 2, 2016
Issue #424

What we generally find is for beliefs to change, people’s experiences have to change first.—Iris Bohnet

When I walked into Cindy Ruptic’s fifth-grade classroom, the first thing I noticed was the desks. They were clustered in groups of four, and each group had its own potted plant and a small bookshelf for personal and library books. Nothing new, you say? Maybe not, but it was new to me. I was still setting up my classroom with desks in straight rows, and my classroom didn’t have its own library. Even worse, my teacher’s desk—more like a shrine, to be honest—took up a fourth of the room.

What was Cindy thinking? How would she ever be able to teach students who weren’t facing her? And what did she know about teaching that I didn’t? For me, seeing Cindy’s classroom sparked the first of many conversations about classroom design, student learning, and best practices for teaching.

Does a new classroom arrangement prompt us to reconsider our beliefs about teaching? Or does the gradual evolution in our teaching prompt us to rearrange our classrooms? Honestly, I’m not sure, but I suspect there’s a bit of chicken and egg going on here. What I do know is that every aspect of our teaching environment sends a message to all who enter. That message should be that this classroom is an interesting place, a comfortable and safe place, and a place where students are actively engaged in their own learning. When you look through the door of a classroom, you get a glimpse into what that teacher believes about students, their learning, and the way teaching is best delivered.

No matter how your classroom has been set up for this year, remember that it is not only your students who will be growing this year. You will be growing, too. How is your teaching improving, and how can that be reflected in your classroom?
