I Love Being A Lindemann Lion!

Wow, what a great year!  The 2015 / 2016 school year seemed to go by so quickly.  Yet, we made such a powerful impact academically and socially for our students.  As a staff, we continue to grow and learn together and support one another.  Each day, I come to work with a smile on my face feeling lucky to be a part of such a positive experience for our students, parents and community.  I work side by side with passionate individuals who help make dreams come true.  Lindemann truly is a very special place!

I hope you and your families enjoy a safe, fun and relaxing summer break.

Mike D.

THINK CENTRAL ACCESS & MATH MATERIALS

Attached are the instructions for teachers to use Think Central (the new Math series) for the summer.  These instructions will allow you “play” with the online software when you have time.  The district version will be ready to go two weeks before school starts.  STEPS TO CREATING AN EVALUATOR ACCOUNT

Last week, you received manipulative kits for the new math series.  Please store these safely in your room for the summer.  This week, you will receive the student and teacher materials.  You will also receive a set of labels for the hardcover books.  Please label each book with a number and label as you store them for the summer.  A sample book will be put in the workroom so we can ensure that all books are labeled in the same way.

PRESS RELEASE:

Allen Park Public Schools is very pleased to announce a special project taking place at Lindemann Elementary, 9201 Carter, Allen Park, on THURSDAY JUNE 9th.  The project is called Art for the Sky, and the premise of the project is that all of the students create a living painting with the help of artist Daniel Dancer.

Dancer has been creating Sky Art for over 30 years, all over the United States, Canada and in countries like Holland, Australia, and India to name a few.  However, Lindemann Elementary will be the 1st MICHIGAN school to partake in this project  This opportunity is made available to us through a grant fund by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and due to the extraordinary efforts of Rachel Trapani, APPS Art Teacher.  We have nearly 700 students at Lindemann Elementary so our sky art painting will be quite large!

Below is a news clip about the Art for the Sky project at a Florida Elementary School

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB-mDNi-M18

We would love for you to attend the living painting project on June 9 from 1:40-2:30 p.m.  It’s always uplifting to see, read and hear about positive stories on the news, especially those that feature children!

Per the attached invitation/schedule, on June 8, students will attend an introductory assembly by grade level.  Daniel Dancer will explain the history and science behind this type of art from the earth.  Then they will will begin to grid out the design on the field in the afternoon. The design will be finalized during the morning of June 9, and weather permitting, children will begin assembling for the living painting at 1:40 p.m.  (Rain out date is June 10 at 8:40 a.m.)  Concluding assemblies are scheduled throughout the morning of June 10 and students will watch the Art for the Sky video and view the aerial photo of our image for the first time!

Below are a few pictures to give you an idea of what the aerial photo looks like.  Lindemann Elementary will be focusing on the Kirtland Warbler, a bird from Michigan’s endangered species list, that was near exhibition before our state created protected areas in the northern counties to ensure its survival.

Or visit http://www.artforthesky.com/htm/skygallery.htm

or Art for the Sky on facebook to see the most recent projects.

Each dot of color is a student of that school. The color of their shirts correspond with the colors of the image in order to create the living painting.

Data Informed Accessibility

Making Optional Needs-based Decisions (DIAMOND) Project Educators interested in better addressing the universal tools, designated supports, and accommodations of students have an opportunity to participate in an educator survey conducted by the National Center on Educational Outcomes and nine states, including Michigan. The goal of the Data Informed Accessibility – Making Optional Needs-based Decisions (DIAMOND) project is to develop professional resources for educators to help them with making optimal decisions related to accessibility and accommodations in the classroom and on state assessments.

Please complete this survey by Friday, June 17, 2016. The survey includes approximately 24 questions (the number depends on specific item responses) and should take no more than 30 minutes to complete. The link is to the survey is:https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TP98X9S

The final question of the survey asks about your willingness to participate in future DIAMOND activities. If you are interested in participating in these activities please share your contact information. This information will not be connected to any project publications, as all project findings will be reported anonymously. If you have any questions about the project, please feel free to contact Dr. Vitaliy Shyyan via email at shyya001@ umn.edu or by phone at 612-624-8561.

Room Changes

This summer we will be making some room changes.

Here’s what we are looking to do:

Mike Cipriani will move to the current staff lounge location.

Tom Fasca will move into Mike Cipriani’s current location.

The Staff Lounge will move into Tom Fasca’s current location.

Erica Majtyka & Lisa Bilunes will switch rooms.

I would like to create a LINDEMANN RTI Team.  This team will not meet until the fall.  If you are interested ( and I hope you are) I would like to order this book for you.  Please let me know if you have an interest.  We already have a couple of our teachers that are a part of the district RTI Program.  I’m sure they would love to help guide our discussions and meetings.  Send me a note so I can add your name to our list.  I want to be sure you have your book for the summer.  Thank you!

Grade Level Scheduling 2016/2017

To help us further along our trek into an MTSS system, each grade level will need to create a common academic schedule / framework for the fall.  I am in the process of securing a date and 4 grade level floaters that will allow you to meet as a team. I will also try and coordinate with Mike, Erica, Tina and Dana to have them available during your meetings to forecast any scheduling conflicts.

The goals for your schedule should be:

  • Common Language arts block (to accommodate tier work, practices like guided reading could be staggered- or at the same time depending how you view it)

  • Common Math Time

  • Common time for science/SS

  • Within your common times, please review your current practices so that we can maximize instructional time.  This would include recess time not exceeding 25 minutes (plus lunch) daily, exception of K,   I don’t mind some initial morning recess, but by week 3- that needs to be over.

  • Review your morning arrival work- valuable on-task time is there for the taking.  We do not have preps until 9:30- What a great time to plan some grade level interventions!

  • Please review the non-negotiables that were agreed to by the grade levels.  I should be able to see these practices going on in your room.  Please let me know what materials and/or training I can provide to get us in the right direction.  Please highlight these items and their times in your schedules- that I would like to have to me by June 17 in whatever format look you wish

  • If your grade needs additional time, please see me for some options, please remember the preps are common so as to offer time to meet among the grade- that can be an option

  • Working with Mike, Erica, Tina and Dana should offer insight to build your schedule around instructional time, not when a student is pulled out.

Please understand that this starts to allow us to implement various degrees of tiered intervention in the classroom, grade level, and building.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions as we move forward.  I will have info on classroom placement for students very soon.  I understand that there may unforeseen obstacles that come into scheduling in the process, try and get as close as you can to the above.

reminder-service

To help us further along our trek into an MTSS system, each grade level will need to create a common academic schedule / framework for the fall.

I Will Need A Copy Of Your Grade Level Schedules BEFORE You Are Cleared To Leave For The Summer.

I will not sign off until each grade level has submitted their academic plan.  Unfortunately, we do not have “floaters” available.  This would be a great time to take advantage of your “common prep time” on June 6th and June 13th.  If needed, you also have June 17th available for your team to meet.  Thank you.
